I woke up one morning and feel this totally Zen-like moment where I got to evaluate the life that I have been leading so far and I am not happy with the results. I need to take a step back from trying to get a Master's degree in Literature even if that's what I really want to do. I realize that more importantly I should be more productive and start giving back to my family what they have done for me in the past 21 22 years. Yes, I have decided to be a good son (once again).

So, this blog is going to get really busy from hereon out. I have returned. And it is a sweet return.

If I didn't think about it, maybe the telephone might ring. Sometimes it does that. If I could think of something else. If I could think of something else. Knobby if I counted five hundred by fives, it might ring by that time. I'll count slowly. I won't cheat. And if it rings when I get to three hundred, I won't stop; I won't answer it until I get to five hundred. Five, ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five, thirty, thirty-five, forty, forty-five, fifty.... Oh, please ring. Please.

This is the last time I'll look at the clock. I will not look at it again. It's ten minutes past seven. He said he would telephone at five o'clock. "I'll call you at five, darling." I think that's where he said "darling." I'm almost sure he said it there. I know he called me "darling" twice, and the other time was when he said good-by. "Good-by, darling." He was busy, and he can't say much in the office, but he called me "darling" twice. He couldn't have minded my calling him up. I know you shouldn't keep telephoning them--I know they don't like that. When you do that they know you are thinking about them and wanting them, and that makes them hate you. But I hadn't talked to him in three days-not in three days. And all I did was ask him how he was; it was just the way anybody might have called him up. He couldn't have minded that. He couldn't have thought I was bothering him. "No, of course you're not," he said. And he said he'd telephone me. He didn't have to say that. I didn't ask him to, truly I didn't. I'm sure I didn't. I don't think he would say he'd telephone me, and then just never do it. Please don't let him do that, God. Please don't.

If he says he can't see me tonight, I'll say, "Why, that's all right, dear. Why, of course it's all right." I'll be the way I was when I first met him. Then maybe he'll like me again. I was always sweet, at first. Oh, it's so easy to be sweet to people before you love them.

I think he must still like me a little. He couldn't have called me "darling" twice today, if he didn't still like me a little. It isn't all gone, if he still likes me a little; even if it's only a little, little bit. You see, God, if You would just let him telephone me, I wouldn't have to ask You anything more. I would be sweet to him, I would be gay, I would be just the way I used to be, and then he would love me again. And then I would never have to ask You for anything more. Don't You see, God? That will be the sign. Five, ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five, thirty, thirty-five, forty, forty-five, fifty, fifty-five. . . It was bad. I knew it was bad. All right, God, send me to hell. You think You're frightening me with Your hell, don't You? You think. Your hell is worse than mine.

I mustn't. I mustn't do this. Suppose he's a little late calling me up --that's nothing to get hysterical about. Maybe he isn't going to call--maybe he's coming straight up here without telephoning. He'll be cross if he sees I have been crying. They don't like you to cry. He doesn't cry. I wish to God I could make him cry. I wish I could make him cry and tread the floor and feel his heart heavy and big and festering in him. I wish I could hurt him like hell.

He doesn't wish that about me. I don't think he even knows how he makes me feel. I wish he could know, without my telling him. They don't like you to tell them they've made you cry. They don't like you to tell them you're unhappy because of them. If you do, they think you're possessive and exacting. And then they hate you. They hate you whenever you say anything you really think. You always have to keep playing little games. Oh, I thought we didn't have to; I thought this was so big I could say whatever I meant. I guess you can't, ever. I guess there isn't ever anything big enough for that. Oh, if he would just telephone, I wouldn't tell him I had been sad about him. They hate sad people. I would be so sweet and so gay, he couldn't help but like me. If he would only telephone. If he would only telephone.

Maybe that's what he is doing. Maybe he is coming on here without calling me up. Maybe he's on his way now. Something might have happened to him. No, nothing could ever happen to him. I can't picture anything happening to him. I never picture him run over. I never see him lying still and long and dead. I wish he were dead. That's a terrible wish. That's a lovely wish. If he were dead, he would be mine. If he were dead, I would never think of now and the last few weeks. I would remember only the lovely times. It would be all beautiful. I wish he were dead. This is silly. It's silly to go wishing people were dead just because they don't call you up the very minute they said they would. Maybe the clock's fast; I don't know whether it's right. Maybe he's hardly late at all. Anything could have made him a little late. Maybe he had to stay at his office. Maybe he went home, to call me up from there, and somebody came in. He doesn't like to telephone me in front of people. Maybe he's worried, just alittle, little bit, about keeping me waiting. He might even hope that I would call him up. I could do that. I could telephone him.

I mustn't. I mustn't, I mustn't. Oh, God, please don't let me telephone him. Please keep me from doing that. I know, God, just as well as You do, that if he were worried about me, he'd telephone no matter where he was or how many people there were around him. Please make me know that, God. I won't telephone him. I'll never telephone him again as long as I live. He'll rot in hell, before I'll call him up. You don't have to give me strength, God; I have it myself. If he wanted me, he could get me. He knows where I ram. He knows I'm waiting here. He's so sure of me, so sure. I wonder why they hate you, as soon as they are sure of you. I should think it would be so sweet to be sure.

It would be so easy to telephone him. Then I'd know. Maybe it wouldn't be a foolish thing to do. Maybe he wouldn't mind. Maybe he'd like it. Maybe he has been trying to get me. Sometimes people try and try to get you on the telephone, and they say the number doesn't answer. I'm not just saying that to help myself; that really happens. You know that really happens, God. Oh, God, keep me away from that telephone. Kcep me away. Let me still have just a little bit of pride. I think I'm going to need it, God. I think it will be all I'll have.

Oh, what does pride matter, when I can't stand it if I don't talk to him? Pride like that is such a silly, shabby little thing. The real pride, the big pride, is in having no pride. I'm not saying that just because I want to call him. I am not. That's true, I know that's true. I will be big. I will be beyond little prides.

Please, God, keep me from, telephoning him. Please, God.

I don't see what pride has to do with it. This is such a little thing, for me to be bringing in pride, for me to be making such a fuss about. I may have misunderstood him. Maybe he said for me to call him up, at five. "Call me at five, darling." He could have said that, perfectly well. It's so possible that I didn't hear him right. "Call me at five, darling." I'm almost sure that's what he said. God, don't let me talk this way to myself. Make me know, please make me know.

I'll think about something else. I'll just sit quietly. If I could sit still. If I could sit still. Maybe I could read. Oh, all the books are about people who love each other, truly and sweetly. What do they want to write about that for? Don't they know it isn't tree? Don't they know it's a lie, it's a God damned lie? What do they have to tell about that for, when they know how it hurts? Damn them, damn them, damn them.

I won't. I'll be quiet. This is nothing to get excited about. Look. Suppose he were someone I didn't know very well. Suppose he were another girl. Then I d just telephone and say, "Well, for goodness' sake, what happened to you?" That's what I'd do, and I'd never even think about it. Why can't I be casual and natural, just because I love him? First, a poem must be magical,
Then musical as a sea-gull.
It must be a brightness moving
And hold secret a bird's flowering.
It must be slender as a bell,
And it must hold fire as well.
It must have the wisdom of bows

It must be able to hear
The luminance of dove and deer.
It must be able to hide
What it seeks, like a bride.
And over all I would like to hover
God, smiling from the poem's cover.

In this poem, Villa extensively makes use of simile in every line. He is basically trying to relate to the readers what a poem is supposed to be. I say “supposed to be” because of the modal “must”. Therefore Villa is not merely stating what a poem “is” but the demonstrative criteria for what it ought to be. The poem sort of reminds me of Archibald McLeash’s “Ars Poetica”.

Let’s examine Villa’s use of oxymoron in this poem. How can the “sea-gull” be “musical”? And how can a “bird” “flower”? I guess what he’s saying is that poems must be able to elicit beauty out of the undesirable for innately, there is beauty in all things. And the “flowering” of the “bird” shows the literary genius that Villa is.

Mostly, if not all, the similes he made use in this poem are comparative to the ones that happen in nature. Therefore, in a way, Villa is saying that a poem must be “organic”. It should be living and as real as the things in nature. Because of its living character, it must be able to be apprehended by the human senses. It shouldn’t be synthetic. It should be able to carry with it emotions (“it must hold fire as well”). It must be a thing of beauty (aesthetics; “it must be able to hear the luminance of dove and deer”). Above all, a poem must carry with it a transcendental element, somewhat celestial to the point of being sacred. This explains the last line of the poem, “God, smiling from the poem’s cover.” All these things, he believes gives depth to a poem, not just mere words.

For years, heavy users of Internet games and chat groups have conversed in their own written language, often indecipherable to outsiders. Now, some of those online words are gaining currency in popular culture -- even in spoken form.

One category of internet games is the Massively Multi-player Online Games (MMOG) have been around for many years now, and over that time, gamers have developed their own language and list of terms and terminologies.

This paper seeks to examine the language used by Filipino online gamers through looking in at the semantics of the terms that they use and as well as the morphological processes involved on how they were formed. We will also be drilling in how these online jargons are used in the context of MMOGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Games).

MMOG, or Massively Multiplayer Online Gaming, is a computer game which is capable of supporting hundreds or thousands of players simultaneously. By necessity, they are played on the internet and feature at least one persistent world (a virtual world that continues to exist even after a player/user exits the world and that user-made changes to its state are, to some extent, permanent). In other words, MMOGs host a large number of players in a single game world, and all of those players can interact with each other at any given time.

For this paper, we will solely put our focus on arguably the most popular MMOG in the Philippines, “DOTA”. DOTA, short for Defense of the Ancients, is a custom map made for Warcraft III: Frozen Throne. DOTA is a team strategy where players can choose sides and his own hero. There are two sides on the games, Sentinel and Scourge. Players on the same side fight the other players on the opposing side to win the game. The objective of the games is to destroy the opponents’ base together with AI (computer/artificial-intelligence) controlled units called creeps. Heroes start at level 1 and levels up to level 25. Heroes level up during the game while killing opposing heroes and creeps. Heroes gain skill when they gain additional levels. DOTA can be played as starting 1v1 up to 5v5. This could be against human players or AI controlled heroes which can be played on DOTA AI maps.

We shall further specify the subject of this study by limiting the play of DOTA via Garena (a virtual coliseum that turns the whole world into one massive battlefield. In other words, it is a venue for MMOG players to pit themselves against other players from all over the world) and Local Area Network or LAN gaming (connecting two or more computers within the same physical space).

The language used by these DOTA players is called elite speak, or more popularly known as “Leetspeak” and written as “l33t 5p34k”.

As the Internet becomes more prevalent, leetspeak, including acronyms that used to appear only in text messages like "LOL" for laughing out loud, is already finding a voice (in spoken form, that is) in foreign lands and is also incorporated to the speech of Filipino DOTA players.

Word formation addresses the processes for creating new words in a language. This does not mean, however, that the study of word formation only addresses how words are created that express concepts new to us current speakers of the language. It also does not mean that we cognitively "form" these new words every time we use them. Instead it investigates past and present means for creating words in languages (in this case, leetspeak).

Thus, this study will operate on the following aspects regarding the controversial leetspeak of DOTA players including terminologies that are essentially Filipino: 1) morphology – how the terms were formed, how they were derived, and the word formation processes involved 2) semantics – the original meaning of the words used and their intended meaning or the purpose; and 3) problems that arise in the craze that leetspeak has created. All these we aim to answer in this paper.

31,536,000 seconds, 525,600 minutes, 8760 hours, 365 ¼ days, 52 weeks, and 12 months. All these make up one year. But the story does not lie on the numbers. It lies on the events that led to it. As many philosophers keep saying, it’s not about the destination, rather it’s the journey.

This one final year of our academic life that we have managed to complete has allowed us to make new out of the ordinary. It has even given us the opportunity to undo what was unpleasant in the zone of orthodoxy. And that unpleasant thing is settling to mediocrity.

For many years, IITians have been trained to strive for distinction, for excellence. And that is something that materializes itself in everything that we do. And this final year in college is composed of the things that we have done to achieve a seat beside the goddess of excellence.

So the year is not just a measure of numbers. It also consists of units of toil and strife. Of loves lost and gained. Of lives touched and nurtured. Of friendships made and treasured. Of families given hope and young children filled with visions of their future. Of crumpled papers and spent money. Of INCs and flat ones. Of punctuality and tardiness. Of mistakes and improvements. Of past failures and current successes. It’s about the becoming of dreamers such as us.

It’s these things that make up the story of a fantastic year. It’s about journeying through all those things in one year and being able to look in the mirror and like what you see: a better and wiser individual.

Because the night is young...and so are we...

Every IITian knows how to balance their time studying and their time having fun. For the latter, most students prefer drowning their ears with the lively music of the 21^st century and blinding their eyes on the dazzling display of neon lights of the nightfall.

Yes, the night is primarily made for rest. But for most youth, rest is anything that keeps their minds off school work (only for the meantime, of course). And so the presence of nocturnal destinations for a night of fun and unwinding with friends (no, not necessarily with beer *cough cough*) exist to help make IITians’ sense of exuberance and solidarity in proper check because what they need is a place oozing with energy and youth and they hope the place could rub those things back to them.

Whether it’s at the town’s newest party place called Club Zinc with their assortment of techno, trance, and house music or at the campus’ neighboring club, Gatz Bar, where you can go to with your friends to hit the dance floor with people who actually know what the word “party” means by heart and by struts.

Or, you could go to Bangkok Nights and feel uber safe with their high end security system so you can always feel confident to lose your inhibitions and have the most fun of your pre-adult life (celebrating the end of a grueling examination) while the night is young there.

Not in the mood for dancing? Feeling for a subtle synchronized stomping of your feet and tapping of your fingers to the beat of the music in the background while lounging it out with your chatty friends who are as stressed out from school as you are perhaps? Well, there’s always Yom’s. You can eat a decent grilled meal there, too. Or you can always head to Pala-o and go to BatC and Iliganon for a table of friends and drinks (presumably coffee and whatever wholesome drinks they serve there).

And there’s also one thing that IITians love to do most. They like to party on the side of the road with their comrades while watching vehicles drive by. There’s something pensive about seeing cars pass (don’t ask, it’s a teenager thing). They do it at Caltex and Petron (don’t worry, it’s safe and no, they don’t serve gasoline on your shot glasses). Nothing like a humble way to drink the night away, huh?

Security? Check. Considerable amount of booze? Check. Goofy friends? Check. In-the-mood-for-party-and-destressing you? Check.

Indeed, the night is made for rest. But for those who stop by these disco joints, no amount of booze in their system can ever take away their dedication towards school and their dream of having a better future. They’re still sober enough for that. Hey, they just graduated didn’t they?

The scent I love to sniff

A scent can do a myriad of things. It can make the wearer of the scent become a totally different person. Or it can make the wearer more desirable. It also makes a good impression. And for the people who smell the scent? They can even fall in love. A single good scent can become familiar to a person's nostrils and they associate it directly to the wearer.

Anyway, who doesn't want a good impression? I love perfumes. They make me smell nice and feel nice. What I most love of all is David Off's Cool Water in its two varieties, the "for men" and "for women". I love using both. They have this tintillating smell that tickles the nostrils and makes me want to sniff more. My classmates and friends like it when they they smell it. They even sense that I'm approaching just by the pleasing scent that Cool Water brings.

Here is the introduction of the thesis of one of my primary friends, Mai-Mai.... It's about literature... Give it a read.

The modernity and technological advancement of our world undeniably affects different aspects of our lives. Recently, many people are more concerned with looking forward as the rest of the globe accelerates toward a technological future. We do not want to be left behind, in spite of everything. Thus, looking back at our cultural roots through in-depth research of the heritage of our ancestors such as the study of folklore seems more and more difficult. The interest in folklore seems to have lessened. (http://folklore.philsites.net/)

Folklore is actually a part of our existence. This heritage is what we essentially adapt. Dr. Damiana Eugenio (1981) says that folklore is any bit of knowledge handed down from generation to generation, which describes or depicts the beliefs and lifestyle of the ancestors of a chosen ethnic group, is rendered unique to that group, and is respected as folklore. Included in folklore are folksongs which are songs belonging to the folk music of a people or area, often existing in several versions or with regional variations. (Eugenio: 1981) The folksongs are music that are transmitted orally (handed down through performance rather than with notation, and learned by hearing), are composed by individual who remain anonymous or, at any rate, are not remembered by name. (Usaraga and Cabalina, 2005)

Nowadays, people can hear songs which are popularized by the aid of mass media. Most of us can even experience last-song syndrome as we hear contemporary songs almost everywhere we go. According to an online dictionary, Urban Dictionary, this syndrome is usually accompanied by subconscious by humming the last song you hear which has stuck in your head all through the journey and beyond. (Medic: 2004) These songs come into a very different style and theme which suit the taste of the generation.

On the other hand, folk music is threatened to decline from its ritual habitat as a result of the intrusive fringes of modernity and the complementing technological advancement which tend to alter values, beliefs and practices. (Grolier Encyclopedia: 1995)

It is also actually through the gateway of music that one can learn about Filipinos. In this manner, we need to know the reason why folk music, especially folksongs, should be preserved and promoted through recognition and appreciation of the Manobo folksongs.

Adding Variety to Word Recognition Exercises

This article introduces word recognition exercises as practical applications of the bottom-up reading model in teaching EFL reading. While various studies have emphasised the importance of word recognition skills in first language situations as a means of improving comprehension and encouraging learners to read, these skills have been neglected in the foreign language situation. This article argues that these exercises are particularly appropriate for foreign language use since they serve to stimulate beginner level foreign language learners to go beyond the first barrier of foreign language reading.

Reading is a complex process that involves top-down processes (i.e. prediction) and bottom-up processes (i.e. word recognition) but most pedagogy emphasize mainly on the first type of reading process. Luckily, a more homeostatic view has risen in recent studies and researches thus recognizing the importance of the often-neglected bottom-up process saying that the most elementary requirement for fluent reading comprehension is rapid and automatic word recognition. Like a gasoline is to the car, word recognition is likewise a prerequisite for reading comprehension.

This paper describes how word recognition exercises were successfully applied in reading classes at a junior high school in Japan. To conduct the study, word recognition exercises were devised and implemented and student feedback was sought on the design of the exercise. Results obtained from the feedback along with data from the comparison of word test scores of students taught using a traditional approach and those taught using word recognition exercises.

Paran notes that greater use of word recognition exercises should be done but he also underlines the necessity of actual reading since reading extensively helps improve the learners’ word recognition skills. In other words, reading programs need to motivate learners to do as much reading as possible thereby giving them a chance to improve their efficiency on reading. To do so, word recognition exercises nd activities should be enforced massively.

The author also claims that there are two challenges to be overcome when word recognition exercises are to assume a more vital role in L2 reading instruction and these two are: 1) convincing learners of their educational value, and 2) designing a variety of exercises so as to maintain learners’ interest and attention.

There are three ways that Crawford claims can provide greater variety in word recognition practice. In saying this, he gave out three proposals.

The first proposal suggests dividing a standard word recognition exercise into two or three sets of words and be added with a different kind of exercise between them. By doing this, you provide further practice with the target words. Having word search puzzles, “jumbles”, unscrambling words, and the like are activities that best support this suggestion.

The second proposal includes the changing of the format of the exercise. This can be done by making adjustments to the way the exercise are laid out on the page as well as to the way the learners search for the words.

The third proposal is about adding an element of competition in each exercise given that speed is a vital component in these types of exercises. In doing this, doing word recognition exercises become more fun and exciting. This may even increase intrinsic motivation among learners once they start to compare their own skills to others and may foster more effective learning process.

Word recognition deserves a higher seat in the reading curriculum judging by its benefits in L2 learning. Although variety is usually an obstacle in increasing the use of these types of exercises due to its highly standardized format, the three proposals mentioned by Crawford help solve this problem. This does not say that standard exercise should no longer be practiced but rather this suggests that a more judicious use of a combination of the standard word recognition exercises and the ones proposed in this article is highly appealing. In doing so, efficient reading skills can be developed and ensures that potential gains are not hindered by monotony.

My friends, Devie and Tin-Tin, asked me to make the "Acknowledgment" part of their thesis paper in exchange for a treat in Red Ribbon (and since I'm such a sucker for sweets, I took it right away!). It's weird coz aren't acknowledgments supposed to be non-vicarious? Shouldn't it come from the person who is meant to say it? Oh, well who am I to argue? As far as I'm concerned, I get a free snack -- cakes and all. ;)

After 3 days of staying at Cagayan de Oro for the 19th Mindanao Parliamentary Debate Championship (Asian Parliamentary Format) at Ateneo de Cagayan-Xavier University, I'm finally back in my cozy little room which is my own heaven.

Three of our team managed to break through the Octo-Finals and it was only my team which went on as far as the Quarters. I don't want to dish out the details of this stressful competition anymore (we could have won that last round against ADZU and proceeded to the semis!).

But it's good that we still belted out as much laughter as we did the last time. Now that's what I call consistency. ^_^

...Hoping, that is.

This afternoon, I went to my doctor (don't ask what sickness I have) and was partially relieved to find out that my X-Ray result showed that my lungs were back to its normal state. Why only partially relieved? It's because X-Ray findings are usually not that reliable. To be able to have nearly accurate results, I have to subject myself to three consecutive sputum tests. But I can't do that just yet coz I'm gonna be out-of-town for three days for the 19th Mindanao Parliamentary Debate Championships (MPDC) at Ateneo de Cagayan Universoty-Xavier University, Cagayan de Oro City.

Hoping my body would really rid itself of the wretched viruses...and also hoping that we'd once again be finalists (or, better yet, be the CHAMPIONS -- although I don't really think we could go THAT far) in the said event.

I've always wanted -- for a very long time -- to change my registered blog in PayPerPost since the one that I enlisted there, Snapshots of an English Major, has been incapable of generating as much traffic as I'd hoped and so I turned it into a personal blog. Because of this, I no longer became qualified to have any more PPP opportunities and I created a different blog, Sonorous....(this blog), which has a higher PageRank (PR 2 lang naman...aw) and is thus more capable of generating more PPP opps for me...if only it were the blog I registered in the first place. But no.

I was browsing through the previous entries of one of my old blogs (Streams of Consciousness) when I came across this entry: "She hates me, she hates me not" which pertains to my English 9 (Advanced Grammar and something else which I forgot) teacher Prof. Boniao.

The date was October 11, a Wednesday (yes, even the detail of the date was on my blog). I had my finals exam for English 9 that day (1:30 - 3:00 PM). Upon finishing it (coverage: Common Sentence Errors), naturally, I went over to my adviser’s (Ma’am Rose Boniao) table to submit my paper (y’know, the whole, "I’m-done-now-I’m-gonna-pass-my-paper-right-away-thing"). I was about to hand it over to her but before I could even do it, she said something about misplacing my scores (the 1/4 piece of paper that I passed to her some time last August). She tried to assure. I said yes, I already submitted my scores to her. Then, she gave me my midterms test paper (I still have my finals paper with me). We talked a bit (I can’t remember what we talked about, though). While we were at it, I was absent-mindedly rolling my finals paper together with my midterms paper in my palms. Afterwards, I said ‘thank you’ and then bid goodbye politely.

I, then, rushed to the English Majors Room for my next class' (English 4 - Introduction to Literature) film showing session of Romeo and Juliet (as if we've never seen it yet!). I was there for quite a long while, when I checked my phone, my English 9 classmate (Junrex) messaged me that Ma’am Boniao needs to see me right away! "Oh, cripe!!!" My paper was still with me!!!! So, I rushed to the room (luckily, there was no one else there aside from us two) where I took my finals test.

Ma’am Boniao asked, "Where is your paper, Philip?" (oh, great! narration!)

"Ma’am, I forgot to submit it to you…"

"You know, I got irritated because of this." (I haven’t seen her soooo serious in my life — she’s not wearing her usual normally serious expression!)

(Oh, boy, was I screwed!) "Ma’am, I really thought that I already gave you my paper."

"I can’t possibly accept it now." (dagadag! sweat started to form)

"But, ma’am…" (I was like a helpless, crippled old man)

"I can’t help you on this one. You have to see the department chairman for this." (*my heart throbbed wildly! It has lost its rhythm!!!*)

"Ma’am (teary-eyed)…" I explained…

…in the end, she finally took my paper. But I can tell she was still agitated.

I couldn’t forget what she told me, "Never in my 36 years of teaching have I witnessed something like this. Gigawas jud nimo ang test paper. You’re an English major. You’re supposed to be responsible. (*toink*)

Ahehehe…dang! How could I be soooo darn forgetful, and, yes stupid?!

But we’re okay now. Th next day, I went to school to give her my scores (the paper she lost) and she asked, "Kumusta na man ka? (in a motherly way)." I couldn’t answer. Tears were starting to form in my eyes (where else could they possibly form??) again. She chuckled out of benevolence. Once again, I apologized and said that I never planned the whole thing. I never changed my answers. then, we talked slightly about the whole thing…and we’re okay now…i guess.

Life is beautiful again… ^_______^

Yes, Pride and Fall are two of our everyday acquaintances. They’re like two threads intertwined. They’re inseperable. If you get too much of the former, you also get too much of the latter. One must keep in mind that acquiring too much pride can lead to our downfall (remember Aristotle’s definition of a tragic hero? Hamartia…ring any bells?).

Induction and Deduction

Induction and deduction are pervasive elements in critical thinking. They are also somewhat misunderstood terms. Arguments based on experience or observation are best expressed inductively, while arguments based on laws or rules are best expressed deductively. Most arguments are mainly inductive. In fact, inductive reasoning usually comes much more naturally to us than deductive reasoning.

Inductive reasoning moves from specific details and observations (typically of nature) to the more general underlying principles or process that explains them (e.g., Newton's Law of Gravity). It is open-ended and exploratory, especially at the beginning. The premises of an inductive argument are believed to support the conclusion, but do not ensure it. Thus, the conclusion of an induction is regarded as a hypothesis. In the Inductive method, also called the scientific method, observation of nature is the authority.

In contrast, deductive reasoning typically moves from general truths to specific conclusions. It opens with an expansive explanation (statements known or believed to be true) and continues with predictions for specific observations supporting it. Deductive reasoning is narrow in nature and is concerned with testing or confirming a hypothesis. It is dependent on its premises. For example, a false premise can lead to a false result, and inconclusive premises will also yield an inconclusive conclusion. Deductive reasoning leads to a confirmation (or not) of our original theories. It guarantees the correctness of a conclusion. Logic is the authority in the deductive method.

Knowing Organizational Patterns

Perhaps one of the best ways to improve your reading ability is to learn to read paragraphs effectively. Many experts believe the paragraph, not the sentence, is the basic unit of thought of a selection. If one can quickly grasp the meaning of each of these though units while reading, then comprehension will be heightened.

It is important to identify with the author's perspective by discovering the way the message is being sent. Every writer has a purpose for writing and some plan of action for getting a message across. This plan of action is the order in which the material will be presented in the text. This order, often called a pattern of organization, should be present in acceptable writing from the smallest to the largest unit of writing: the paragraph, groups of paragraphs, sub-chapters, chapters, groups of chapters, whole books, and even series of books. Each of these, then, contains a certain pattern of organization.

Anticipating the order in which the material will be presented helps you put the facts into perspective and to see how the parts fit into the whole. For example, if the selection begins by indicating that there are four important components of management, you are alert to look for four key phrases to mark and remember. Likewise, if a comparison is suggested, you want to note the points that are similar in nature. For material that shows cause and effect, you need to anticipate the linkage and note the relationship.

The importance of these patterns is that they signal how the facts will be presented. They are blueprints for you to use.

The following six examples are the patterns of organization that are most frequently found in textbooks.

Simple Listing/Examples
Items are randomly listed in a series of supporting facts or details. These supporting elements are of equal value, and the order in which they are presented is of no importance. Changing the order of the items does not change the meaning of the paragraph.

Description

Definition

Chronological (Time) Order or Sequence

Comparison - Contrast
Items are related by the comparisons (similarities) that are made or by the contrasts (differences) that are presented. The author's purpose is to show similarities and differences.

Cause and Effect

One factor that aids a student in becoming successful in school is a rich vocabulary. A rich vocabulary can also be helpful in situations outside the school.

You can increase your vocabulary through the use of a dictionary.

Everytime you come across an unfamiliar word, it is always good to refer to a dictionary to find its meaning. Other uses of the dictionary are for finding the spelling and pronunciation of words.

When you look up words in a dictionary, you notice that the word entries are arranged in an alphabetical order. Why is this so? This is for convenient access of the users. Imagine how hard it would be to find the meaning of a word in a dictionary that has no order of arrangement for its entries!

Below is an example of a dictionary entry. Notice the different details that are found in one entry?

Playing DOTA

I know DOTA has been around for like more than 3 years now but to me then it was just another one of those really really violent games which has a plot that revolves around killing the most number of people (which, ironically, would give you the title "GODLIKE"). I used to get bored with that idea (although I seem to enjoy Counter Strike and Grand Theft Auto). But now, ever since my good friend Mark (who is my other friend's ex -- useless information, I know but I just have to say that since there are a lotta Mark's in the world) handed me a copy of the installer of the game, I have gotten into the habit of playing DOTA whenever I'm bored (usually at night when I'm not busy being coy at anonymous people -- usually perverted maniacs -- over the internet).

It's still a bit confusing for me coz I still am not familiar with all the shortcut keys and the items that you need to buy and the right combination of them that you need to have to improve your character's stats and the jargon that these DOTA addicts speak but nonetheless, it's FUN.

My favorite characters are: Krobelus, Enchantress, and Moon Fang (yes, girl power -- I'm all about that)

Missing that feeling

What I wouldn't give to be a freshman again!

I think these people are taller than I was at their age (heck, they're even taller than me!). There must be something in the food they eat (am I not eating right? Or should I stop eating the kind of food I'm used to gnaw away everytime my mouth feels bored and is in want of something exciting to do besides kissing -- and then of course there's tonguing but that's a little too explicit, don't you think?).

Other than the "tall" factor, there are more cute kids out there. My batch aren't as fantasy-material as theirs are. And plus you have got to love their level of impulsiveness (I was meaning to type out "impulsivity" but spellcheck doesn't seem to recognize it as a word since it highlighted it in a red jagged line. Ahh, spellcheck! if only people knew your worth!).

But on a much more serious note, I do envy these freshmen. I miss feeling the same wonder and excitement that they oh-so unabashedly show in their aura everytime I look at them with such longing and jealousy and say, "I miss being that way. To know that anything can happen. Away from the fact that things are not as mundane as other people (grown ups) would like you to believe...."

Here is a short story that I found in one of the random blogs that I came across with one very boring and unproductive day...

My family called me, “Pris,” which I hated.

It bothered me until I was thirteen and Felicity sauntered into our humdrum classroom, after being expelled from some top echelon school.

With several seats vacant, she collapsed into the one beside me, and blew a balloon of bubblegum that somehow didn’t stick to the gleaming swatch of dark hair covering half her face.

Behind her books, she exaggerated our teacher’s lisp. “Such supercilious pusillanimity.”

I laughed and spent the afternoon in detention. Thereafter we were best friends. Felicity lived in a mansion overlooking Lake Michigan. Her parents traveled and her brother Barret attended boarding school. A housekeeper existed, but barely.

In class, Felicity showed me her body-piercings. When nobody else was looking, she flashed her navel and budding breasts.

My parents didn’t miss me. They were happy I’d made such a rich friend. At Felicity’s, we watched movies, swam naked in the lake, and, fitting our barefoot soles together, pushed, testing our leg strength.

That summer I kissed her in a webbed hammock, getting lost in her perfect, sweet face. Breathless, I asked, what next?

Her quicksilver blue eyes darted around. “Lots,” she said, “but you’re not ready.”

Then I fell in love with the backs of her knees as we bicycled along less fancy streets, which nonetheless maintained summer’s endless leafy green canopy. Splotches of sunlight shimmered over the asphalt.

Felicity’s instinct for houses where contented owners answered the doorbell rarely missed. Her game required genteel manners and a waitress’s receipt book pad. If the homeowner would sign the receipt—no money, don’t worry—Felicity promised she would think of the person every day. She’d say their name out loud, guaranteeing their happiness. As witness, I tried unsuccessfully to act solemn. After we collected signatures covering two booklets, though, the game bored her.

Halfway through August, everything bored her. Suddenly, Felicity refused to leave her darkened bedroom—or even talk. I visited and she ignored me.

Except, just before leaving forever, she said, “If you ever think of me, Pris, say my name. And I’ll say yours.”

That was ten years ago. Last week her brother Barret, whom I had never met, found me in Manhattan. He’d pay for the plane ticket if I’d visit the hospital—the same one where John Hinckley is kept.

A nurse led me to an unrecognizable Felicity, huge and twitchy from drugs. Her lustrous hair was hacked into a bowl-shape, her quicksilver eyes blank, and her tantalizing face hung bloated and vacant.

Appalled, I finally took her swollen hand. Her voice burped like gas from a forgotten cave. “I. Know. You.”

“And Felicity,” I choked, “I know you.

Her laugh was guttural. “I don’t know me. But you…”

“I say your name, Felicity, every day.”

When I returned, my husband teased me for lying to her.

As if he could possibly understand. As if anyone could.

The difference between the teaching strategies and techniques employed in teaching young learners from teaching adults is greatly stressed out in this article. It states the characteristics that essentially draw the line that divides the two from each other. Young children tend to change their mood every other minute since their attention span is more volatile as compared to adults. Yet, it is stated that young learners exhibit greater motivation to do things that appeal to them as opposed to adults.

The paper recognizes the difficulty of catering to the interests of all more than twenty heads in a classroom yet sees to it that the teacher should be inventive in selecting interesting activities, and must deliver a variety of them to avoid the boredom caused by monotony.

The Total Physical Response (TPR) approach is used in coalition with other communicative and audiolingual approaches. Nothing is pure for the approaches within themselves are not sufficient to bring about a high level of proficiency towards the learners. The end goal, it has to be said, is communicative competence and what better way to achieve that than by fusing all effective aspects of the different approaches.

The approach includes the typical way of warming up and setting the mood for the discussion of the lesson, introduction of the topic to allow students’ familiarization with the topic, goal setting, presentation of grammatical item in context, explanation, (students analyze), formal drill, less-formal drill, pair work, group work, and writing (complete as homework).

The key in this matter is to keep in mind the characteristics of young learners and make sure if they are addressed in every aspect of your discussion of the lesson.

The question as to whether or not the shifting of the routine from writing individually to writing as a group fosters a highly motivating learning experience for EFL/ESL students is dealt with in this article. Thorough dicsussion of collaborative writing as an effective classroom activity is expressed in the text.

Collaborative writing, considered as a pedagogical tool for teachers,is a type of activity that can yield sustainable benefits on the part of the students such that peer cooperation is developed and it increases their motivation. Through this, students learn from each other and edit each other’s mistakes. This even motivates students who dislike writing in the first place because of the shift of routine.

The article was based on a group activity done by the students regarding the poem of an 8-year old girl. In the creative and integrative level of the discussion, the students were asked to team up with one or more peers t go through with the writing process which is the creation of a new version of the poem.

Multiple positive results were yielded from this activity. Collaborative writing promotes individual participation, increases self-confidence, and encourages productivity. Teamwork enables students to learn from each other and stimulate each other’s sense of creativity. The activity can be fun, which should always be a goal of instruction. Through this, writing will be viewed as an enjoyable activity that allows them to express ideas the way they never imagined they ever could. Apart from that, in a broader sense, collaborative writing is a real-life practice done by many professionals (engineers, chemists, psychologists) and is something that the students can apply in their future careers.

On error treatment (syntax and semantics)

In one of our Language Trends classes, a classmate was doing her report and we weren't listening to her (okay, maybe it was only me who wasn't listening to her). Our teacher noticed this and she made us get a one-half crosswise sheet of paper and answer the question below.Question: How do we properly address the error corrections on syntax and semantics?

Answer:

There are a lot of things that we need to consider when it comes to correcting errors since the way we "repair" a communication breakdown may have adverse psychological effects to a person's performance in language learning.

When there are errors, it is best that we contextualize when the error was made. IIn language learning, we need to operate under the principle that errors are an integral part in language learning. We strive for fluency and not accuracy. Therefore, in the face of an error, the teacher has to self-ask: Is the error related to the language focus? How grave is the error committed? Is the sentence still understandable even with the presence of the error?

When it comes to matters like syntax and semantics, one effective way of error treatment in these fields is by clarification. This clarification can happen indirectly. Say, after the error has been committed, the teacher would then execute a guided activity regarding the error. The teacher will model the language (inclusive of syntax and semantics) and will then discuss and ask participation of the whole class. After this, it is assumed that the child who has committed errors in the area (syntax and semantics) can compare his sentences to those modeled by the teacher on the board. This way, the child evaluates himself and we provide an avenue for the child to self-correct.

...and by "won", I don't mean that we got First Place... It's actually 4th Place - and if you haven't joined any debate event yet (specially the 18th Mindanao Parliamentary Debate Championship), then you wouldn't know the real weight that this title has within itself.

We (MSU-IIT) made history last October 10-12 at Butuan City. We were the first ones (in the history of MSU-IIT and MPDC) to enter into the final round outside the four founding institutions of the event, namely: Ateneo de Davao University, Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan, MSU-Marawi, and Ateneo de Zamboanga University.

You can only imagine the surprise I felt when I found myself speaking in front of the other (more worthy...I'm humble, like this...hehe...but no, seriously, I don't think I deserve to be in the finals) participants wearing a formal attire that isn't even mine (borrowed individual pieces of clothing from people with a good heart -- and clothes to spare).

Nobody likes fake people. And although I am one, having a friend who also happens to be one is not exactly what I would call a great tandem.

Videoke - What keeps friends together

.....okay, maybe I was just overstating the value of karaoke machines but videokes are what Filipino people should be proud of. How many people except us can actually sing and roll their blues away the way we do??? I know none (and this is not just the biased regionalistic behavior in me talking!).

Filipinos have a gift of unusual nonchalance that could easily turn into a curse of apathy lest we do not make an effort not to carry this gift overboard.

My primary friends and I always find solace in our karaoke sessions. It's what keeps us sane -- even though it makes us act a little insane but we get back to sanity after we've finished singing the song and get a score 100 (default or not).

My classmates are all getting busy for their thesis. They'll be having their defense come this Wednesday, September 24. That's the day before my mom's birthday. I don't even have the faintest idea as to what I should give her. X_x ...and I am plagued by the question, "Should I make an effort to give her something?". Judging by our most recent brawl this morning (like 3 hours earlier), I think it'll be too awkward to be mushy with her yet. Urgh... I was never programmed to easily make apologies towards family members. I can't even pretend to actually MEAN the gesture. It's easier to fake it with friends. Because in the status of camaraderie, being ingenuine is an understandable trait. And although we see through that, we understand (as an unspoken agreement) that the gesture alone (be it real or feigned) is something that takes a lot of guts to do. And so we see the authenticity behind the obvious farcity.

Anyway, the thesis defense schedules start next week. And I'll be the only senior student (that I know of) who'll be left behind. After their defense, they're bound to graduate and move on to their job-seeking and hopefully-professional lives. The thought that I wont be with people like them (whom I've become so accustomed to be with for the past 3 to 4 years) come lunchtime or whenever I have time to slack around or chill out.

I cant bear the thought of getting through college without the people whom I used to spending it with.
